Lot description Show orginal version

Image showing the Battle of Warsaw from a bird's eye view during the Swedish Deluge .

The battle took place on July 18-20, 1656 and the painting depicts the third day and took place between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden and Brandenburg.

In the battle, the smaller Swedish-Brandenburgian army won a victory over the numerically superior Polish-Lithuanian forces, although the victory achieved little in the long run.

Polish-Lithuanian losses were insignificant, and although the Swedish troops managed to retake Warsaw, they were soon forced to abandon it.

The painting is signed near the lower left corner by Dutchman Wilhelm Swidde (1660 - 1714), who worked in Amsterdam and Stockholm.

On the frame of the painting:

...W.P. Gorczynski

Officers and Cadets of the 2 Szwadr

1st Squadron ... ...

1928

Dimensions of entire painting including frame: 68 x 39,5 mm
